Hi friends and welcome to the Rosé edition of Barolo for lunch 😊 I picked out two very different wines this week, which can be fun to try next to each other - if nothing else to learn that rose can be more than the veery pale Provence versions. If you struggle with finding the above, my “other” go-to rosé is La Spinetta Il Rosé di Casanova. Cheers! 🍷
Gute Vingård Rosé – #33335 – 229:-
Sweden still has some way to go when it comes to producing quality wines, but this is pretty fun to try. Some strawberries and grapefruit makes this quite interesting and a pretty nice option if you want a local alternative to pair with roasted almonds on summery day. 100% Rondo.
Guigal Tavel Rosé – #92551 – 185:-
This Tavel from Guigal is way closer to a light red than a rosé, which might be the reason why i like it 😅 Strawberry, blood orange and pretty solid backbone makes this a really nice pairing with lighter food, ideally with a Ceasar Salad with pomegranate seeds on top. 65% Grenache, 15% Cinsault%, 10% Clairett% and 10% Syrah.

Nerd zone: Tavel
Tavel is one of the few French appellations that is dedicated exclusively to rosé, and it shows in the quality and character of its wines. It’s located in southern Rhône, just across the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and as such the wines are usually made with a blend of pretty typical Rhône grapes: Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre etc.
Tavel rosé is famous for being robust, structured, and deeply colored, and (as I mentioned above) usually much closer to a light red than your typical pale rosé wines. Unlike many rosés that are made for chugging down in the sun, Tavel wines have enough body to pair with a wide range of foods. They’re often made with some skin contact to give them some structure and some producers even age the wines a while in oak to add some spicy notes. The result is a wine that can quite easily stand up to grilled meats or even Mediterranean spicy dishes.
If you’re anything like me and think that rose is usually mostly a waste of liver capacity, then this can be a good option to try.
